How many musicians are in the Either/Orchestra?

The core ensemble is ten musicians: two trumpets, trombone, three saxes, piano, bass, drums and congas. The band is sometimes augmented by vocalists – particular for Ethiopian music – and on special occasions the groups will add more instrumentalists, sometimes increasing the size to as many as twenty eight players. Leader Russ Gershon also performs in Trio with bassist Rick McLaughlin and Brooke Sofferman, but the essence of the Either/Orchestra is the six horn front line.

What kind of music does the E/O play?

The group’s original and central repertoire is includes jazz in all styles of swing to bop to fusion to Latin – always given our distinctive twist. A very popular and essential part of the repertoire now is Ethiopian music. The band puts its own stamp on every style, and has original compositions as well as historical works.

Will the E/O travel to peform?

The group has logged over 100,000 miles by van, bus or plane over the years. While they are not hitting the road for six week van tours like they did thirty years ago, they will still travel for the right situation.

Does the E/O do visiting artist work like clinics and residencies?

All of the members of the group have taught extensively and the group together has done many workshops and clinics on a range of topics in music. These usually come in conjunction with performances. Leader Russ Gershon, who has taught music history at colleges including MIT, and taught myriad jazz and rock ensembles for all levels and ages, is also available as a solo visiting artist.
